Personal Training For Seniors

If you are over fifty and looking for a personal trainer to help improve your health, cognitive function or depression then you have come to the right place.

Why should seniors hire a personal trainer?

Let’s look at the main reasons the senior generation should seek help from a personal trainer:

  • Health Conditions: Seniors are more likely to suffer from chronic health conditions such as diabetes, arthritis and heart disease. They may also have mobility, balance problems, high blood pressure or difficulty walking.
  • Staying Active: As you get older it’s even more important to stay active. Not doing any exercise or keeping active can have a detrimental effect on your health. You may lose your ability to do certain tasks and lose motivation. This is usually due to a lack of physical activity. Ultimately it can affect your independence.
  • Depression can also impact older populations. Physical exercise will help to improve your mood and reduce feelings of depression. It will also help with aspects of cognitive function and your ability to move.
  • Losing muscle and strength is one of the main problems as you age so it’s crucial to preserve as much of that as possible otherwise you can suffer from joint pain and back pain.

What are the best types of exercise for seniors?

Combining cardiovascular activity and muscle strengthening exercises are the best types of exercises for Seniors. Selecting exercises that target all the major muscle groups 2-3 times a week are the most effective.

It’s important to do things you enjoy so when I put together an exercise program for my older clients its always varied, enjoyable and tailored to their specific needs.

Tailored personal training plans for seniors

Each client is different but I will always follow the same plan:

  • I start with an assessment of your health and fitness and if necessary, I will require consent from a medical professional before we begin.
  • During the session we will start with light cardiovascular exercise to make sure you are warmed up properly. I will assess you to see if you have any discomfort, such as knee pain, hip pain or lower back pain. I will then go through functional movements to see how much mobility you have and if you are able to perform exercises correctly.
  • Furthermore, we will go through strength tests and cardiovascular tests.

Setting realistic personal training targets and goals for seniors

We all need to push ourselves and this is just as important for the older generation. You must learn to challenge yourself. I will help you set realistic targets and goals and help you progress towards them. All my programs are completely different and are tailored for you, around your lifestyle.
